How the answer is worked out

A percentage is a number out of 100. To find what percent 10 is of 1, imagine 1 split into 100 equal parts of 0.01 each. 10 contains 1,000 of those parts, so 10 is 1,000% of 1.

10 is more than the whole amount (10 times as much) of 1. 10 goes past 1 by 9, which is another 900% on top of the whole.

Why calculate this?

Expressing one number as a percentage of another puts different-sized quantities on the same scale: test scores, shares of a budget, progress towards a goal.

• Targets: selling 10 items against a target of 1 means reaching 1,000% of the target, beating it by 900%.
• Budgets: spending $10 from a budget of $1 is 1,000% of the budget, an overspend of $9.
• Growth: a town of 1 thousand people that grows to 10 thousand is now 1,000% of its old size.

A quicker way

Find 1% of 1 first: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01. Then count how many of those fit into 10: 10 ÷ 0.01 = 1,000.

Because 1 × 100 = 100, multiply both numbers by 100: 10 × 100 = 1000, so the answer is 1000% with no division needed.

Check the answer

Work backwards: 1,000% of 1 is 10 × 1 = 10. Getting 10 back shows the answer is right.

Rounding

Rounded to a whole number the percentage is 1,000, to one decimal place 1000.0 and to two decimal places 1000.00. Round only at the end: rounding halfway through a calculation can change the last digit.

The formula explained

percentage = part ÷ whole × 100. The part is the number you are asking about and the whole is the number after “of”. Dividing gives the fraction of the whole, and multiplying by 100 turns that fraction into a number out of 100.

Another worked example: 2 is what % of 83

1. Divide the part by the whole: 2 ÷ 83 = 0.024096
2. Multiply by 100: 0.024096 × 100 = 2.4096%
