How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 10 ÷ 16 = 0.625
- Multiply by 100: 0.625 × 100 = 62.5%
- Check: Work backwards: 62.5% of 16 is 0.625 × 16 = 10.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/16 = p/100, so p = 10 × 100 ÷ 16 = 62.5%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10/16*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
