How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 10 ÷ 50 = 0.2
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.2 × 100 = 20%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20% of 50 is 0.2 × 50 = 10.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/50 = p/100, so p = 10 × 100 ÷ 50 = 20%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10/50*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

10 is between a tenth and a quarter of 50. The part that is left, 40, is the other 80%.

Test scores: 10 correct answers out of 50 is a score of 20%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.

Turning it around

If you know that 10 is 20% of a number, you can get that number back: 10 ÷ 0.2 = 50. And 50 as a percentage of 10 is 500%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
