How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 100 ÷ 200 = 0.5
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.5 × 100 = 50%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 50% of 200 is 0.5 × 200 = 100.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 100/200 = p/100, so p = 100 × 100 ÷ 200 = 50%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100/200*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

Turning it around
