How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 11 ÷ 55 = 0.2
- Multiply by 100: 0.2 × 100 = 20%
- Check: Work backwards: 20% of 55 is 0.2 × 55 = 11.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/55 = p/100, so p = 11 × 100 ÷ 55 = 20%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =11/55*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
