How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 12 ÷ 4 = 3
  2. Multiply by 100: 3 × 100 = 300%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 300% of 4 is 3 × 4 = 12.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/4 = p/100, so p = 12 × 100 ÷ 4 = 300%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12/4*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

12 is more than the whole amount (3 times as much) of 4. 12 goes past 4 by 8, which is another 200% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 12 items against a target of 4 means reaching 300% of the target, beating it by 200%.

Turning it around

If you know that 12 is 300% of a number, you can get that number back: 12 ÷ 3 = 4. And 4 as a percentage of 12 is 33.3333%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
