How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 13 ÷ 2 = 6.5
- Multiply by 100: 6.5 × 100 = 650%
- Check: Work backwards: 650% of 2 is 6.5 × 2 = 13.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/2 = p/100, so p = 13 × 100 ÷ 2 = 650%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =13/2*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
13 is more than the whole amount (6.5 times as much) of 2. 13 goes past 2 by 11, which is another 550% on top of the whole.
Targets: selling 13 items against a target of 2 means reaching 650% of the target, beating it by 550%.
Turning it around
If you know that 13 is 650% of a number, you can get that number back: 13 ÷ 6.5 = 2. And 2 as a percentage of 13 is 15.3846%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
