How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 13 ÷ 50 = 0.26
- Multiply by 100: 0.26 × 100 = 26%
- Check: Work backwards: 26% of 50 is 0.26 × 50 = 13.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/50 = p/100, so p = 13 × 100 ÷ 50 = 26%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =13/50*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
