How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 15 ÷ 12 = 1.25
- Multiply by 100: 1.25 × 100 = 125%
- Check: Work backwards: 125% of 12 is 1.25 × 12 = 15.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/12 = p/100, so p = 15 × 100 ÷ 12 = 125%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15/12*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
15 is more than the whole amount (1.25 times as much) of 12. 15 goes past 12 by 3, which is another 25% on top of the whole.
Targets: selling 15 items against a target of 12 means reaching 125% of the target, beating it by 25%.
