How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 15 ÷ 8 = 1.875
- Multiply by 100: 1.875 × 100 = 187.5%
- Check: Work backwards: 187.5% of 8 is 1.875 × 8 = 15.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/8 = p/100, so p = 15 × 100 ÷ 8 = 187.5%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15/8*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
