How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 15 ÷ 80 = 0.1875
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.1875 × 100 = 18.75%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18.75% of 80 is 0.1875 × 80 = 15.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/80 = p/100, so p = 15 × 100 ÷ 80 = 18.75%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15/80*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
