How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 18 ÷ 72 = 0.25
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.25 × 100 = 25%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25% of 72 is 0.25 × 72 = 18.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/72 = p/100, so p = 18 × 100 ÷ 72 = 25%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18/72*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

18 is between a quarter and a half of 72. The part that is left, 54, is the other 75%.

Test scores: 18 correct answers out of 72 is a score of 25%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.
