How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.26 × 100 = 26%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26% of 100 is 0.26 × 100 = 26.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/100 = p/100, so p = 26 × 100 ÷ 100 = 26%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =26/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

26 is between a quarter and a half of 100. The part that is left, 74, is the other 74%.

Test scores: 26 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 26%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.
