How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 26 ÷ 13 = 2
  2. Multiply by 100: 2 × 100 = 200%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 200% of 13 is 2 × 13 = 26.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/13 = p/100, so p = 26 × 100 ÷ 13 = 200%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =26/13*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

26 is more than the whole amount (2 times as much) of 13. 26 goes past 13 by 13, which is another 100% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 26 items against a target of 13 means reaching 200% of the target, beating it by 100%.

Turning it around

If you know that 26 is 200% of a number, you can get that number back: 26 ÷ 2 = 13. And 13 as a percentage of 26 is 50%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
