How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 26 ÷ 40 = 0.65
- Multiply by 100: 0.65 × 100 = 65%
- Check: Work backwards: 65% of 40 is 0.65 × 40 = 26.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/40 = p/100, so p = 26 × 100 ÷ 40 = 65%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =26/40*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
