How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 3 ÷ 10 = 0.3
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.3 × 100 = 30%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 30% of 10 is 0.3 × 10 = 3.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/10 = p/100, so p = 3 × 100 ÷ 10 = 30%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3/10*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

3 is between a quarter and a half of 10. The part that is left, 7, is the other 70%.

Test scores: 3 correct answers out of 10 is a score of 30%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.

Turning it around

If you know that 3 is 30% of a number, you can get that number back: 3 ÷ 0.3 = 10. And 10 as a percentage of 3 is 333.3333%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
