How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
- Multiply by 100: 0.3 × 100 = 30%
- Check: Work backwards: 30% of 100 is 0.3 × 100 = 30.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 30/100 = p/100, so p = 30 × 100 ÷ 100 = 30%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =30/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
30 is between a quarter and a half of 100. The part that is left, 70, is the other 70%.
Test scores: 30 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 30%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.
Turning it around
If you know that 30 is 30% of a number, you can get that number back: 30 ÷ 0.3 = 100. And 100 as a percentage of 30 is 333.3333%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
