How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 30 ÷ 50 = 0.6
- Multiply by 100: 0.6 × 100 = 60%
- Check: Work backwards: 60% of 50 is 0.6 × 50 = 30.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 30/50 = p/100, so p = 30 × 100 ÷ 50 = 60%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =30/50*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

Turning it around
