How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 31 ÷ 10 = 3.1
  2. Multiply by 100: 3.1 × 100 = 310%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 310% of 10 is 3.1 × 10 = 31.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/10 = p/100, so p = 31 × 100 ÷ 10 = 310%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31/10*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

31 is more than the whole amount (3.1 times as much) of 10. 31 goes past 10 by 21, which is another 210% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 31 items against a target of 10 means reaching 310% of the target, beating it by 210%.

Turning it around

If you know that 31 is 310% of a number, you can get that number back: 31 ÷ 3.1 = 10. And 10 as a percentage of 31 is 32.2581%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
