How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 4 ÷ 3 = 1.333333
- Multiply by 100: 1.333333 × 100 = 133.3333%
- Check: Work backwards: 133.3333% of 3 is 1.333333 × 3 = 4.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/3 = p/100, so p = 4 × 100 ÷ 3 = 133.3333%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =4/3*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
4 is more than the whole amount (1.333 times as much) of 3. 4 goes past 3 by 1, which is another 33.3333% on top of the whole.
Targets: selling 4 items against a target of 3 means reaching 133.3333% of the target, beating it by 33.3333%.
Turning it around
