How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 4 ÷ 8 = 0.5
- Multiply by 100: 0.5 × 100 = 50%
- Check: Work backwards: 50% of 8 is 0.5 × 8 = 4.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/8 = p/100, so p = 4 × 100 ÷ 8 = 50%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =4/8*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
4 is exactly half of 8. The part that is left, 4, is the other 50%.
Test scores: 4 correct answers out of 8 is a score of 50%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.
Turning it around
If you know that 4 is 50% of a number, you can get that number back: 4 ÷ 0.5 = 8. And 8 as a percentage of 4 is 200%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
