How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 40 ÷ 10 = 4
  2. Multiply by 100: 4 × 100 = 400%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 400% of 10 is 4 × 10 = 40.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/10 = p/100, so p = 40 × 100 ÷ 10 = 400%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40/10*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

40 is more than the whole amount (4 times as much) of 10. 40 goes past 10 by 30, which is another 300% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 40 items against a target of 10 means reaching 400% of the target, beating it by 300%.

Turning it around

If you know that 40 is 400% of a number, you can get that number back: 40 ÷ 4 = 10. And 10 as a percentage of 40 is 25%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
