How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 5 ÷ 3 = 1.666667
- Multiply by 100: 1.666667 × 100 = 166.6667%
- Check: Work backwards: 166.6667% of 3 is 1.666667 × 3 = 5.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 5/3 = p/100, so p = 5 × 100 ÷ 3 = 166.6667%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =5/3*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
5 is more than the whole amount (1.667 times as much) of 3. 5 goes past 3 by 2, which is another 66.6667% on top of the whole.
