How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5
  2. Multiply by 100: 2.5 × 100 = 250%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 250% of 20 is 2.5 × 20 = 50.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 50/20 = p/100, so p = 50 × 100 ÷ 20 = 250%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50/20*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

50 is more than the whole amount (2.5 times as much) of 20. 50 goes past 20 by 30, which is another 150% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 50 items against a target of 20 means reaching 250% of the target, beating it by 150%.

Turning it around

If you know that 50 is 250% of a number, you can get that number back: 50 ÷ 2.5 = 20. And 20 as a percentage of 50 is 40%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
