How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 51 ÷ 1 = 51
- Multiply by 100: 51 × 100 = 5,100%
- Check: Work backwards: 5,100% of 1 is 51 × 1 = 51.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/1 = p/100, so p = 51 × 100 ÷ 1 = 5,100%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =51/1*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
51 is more than the whole amount (51 times as much) of 1. 51 goes past 1 by 50, which is another 5,000% on top of the whole.
Targets: selling 51 items against a target of 1 means reaching 5,100% of the target, beating it by 5,000%.
Turning it around
If you know that 51 is 5,100% of a number, you can get that number back: 51 ÷ 51 = 1. And 1 as a percentage of 51 is 1.9608%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
