How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 60 ÷ 10 = 6
  2. Multiply by 100: 6 × 100 = 600%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 600% of 10 is 6 × 10 = 60.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/10 = p/100, so p = 60 × 100 ÷ 10 = 600%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60/10*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

60 is more than the whole amount (6 times as much) of 10. 60 goes past 10 by 50, which is another 500% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 60 items against a target of 10 means reaching 600% of the target, beating it by 500%.

Turning it around

If you know that 60 is 600% of a number, you can get that number back: 60 ÷ 6 = 10. And 10 as a percentage of 60 is 16.6667%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
