How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 75 ÷ 60 = 1.25
- Multiply by 100: 1.25 × 100 = 125%
- Check: Work backwards: 125% of 60 is 1.25 × 60 = 75.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/60 = p/100, so p = 75 × 100 ÷ 60 = 125%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =75/60*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
