Fraction calculator

Type two fractions, or mixed numbers using the small box for the whole part, and pick an operation. The answer and every step update as you type.

= 5/6 ≈ 0.833333
  1. Common denominator: the least common multiple of 2 and 3 is 6, so 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6.
  2. Add the numerators: 3 + 2 = 5, giving 5/6.

The four rules

Adding and subtracting need a common denominator: rewrite both fractions over the least common multiple of the bottoms, then add or subtract the tops. Multiplying is top times top over bottom times bottom. Dividing is multiplying by the reciprocal: flip the second fraction and multiply.

Simplify at the end by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common factor. For more practice, try the adding fractions worksheets or turn a fraction into a decimal with the fraction to decimal calculator.

Questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

Find the least common multiple of the denominators, rewrite each fraction with it, then add the numerators. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

How do I enter a mixed number?

Put the whole part in the small box on the left and the fraction in the boxes on the right: 2 3/4 is 2, 3 and 4.

Why is my answer an improper fraction?

When the top is bigger than the bottom the calculator also shows the mixed number, such as 7/4 = 1 3/4.
