How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 9 = 0.09
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.09 ÷ 9 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/9, so part = 1 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.09 is the 1% share of 9. The remaining 99% is 8.91, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $9 saves $0.09, so you pay $8.91.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 9 by 1% gives 9.09 and decreasing it by 1% gives 8.91. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 8.9991, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 9% of 1. 1% of 9 and 9% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
