How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 4 = 1.16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.16 ÷ 4 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/4, so part = 29 × 4 ÷ 100 = 1.16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.16 is the 29% share of 4. The remaining 71% is 2.84, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $4 saves $1.16, so you pay $2.84.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 4 by 29% gives 5.16 and decreasing it by 29% gives 2.84. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 3.6636, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
