How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
  2. Multiply: 0.52 × 98 = 50.96
  3. Check: Work backwards: 50.96 ÷ 98 × 100 = 52%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/98, so part = 52 × 98 ÷ 100 = 50.96. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =52%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

50.96 is the 52% share of 98. The remaining 48% is 47.04, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 52% off an item priced $98 saves $50.96, so you pay $47.04.

Adding and taking away 52%

Increasing 98 by 52% gives 148.96 and decreasing it by 52% gives 47.04. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 71.5008, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
