How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 30% of 40 = 0.3 × 40 = 12
- Take it off the price: 40 − 12 = 28
- Check: Add the saving back: 28 + 12 = 40.
Another method. In one step: you pay 70% of the price, so 0.7 × 40 = 28. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40*(1-30%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 30% off, you pay 70% of the price: 28 instead of 40, a saving of 12.
Shopping: an item marked $40 with 30% off costs $28 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
30% off followed by another 30% off is 51% off in total, not 60%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 30% of 40. Two discounts do not add up: 30% off and then another 30% off leaves 19.6, not 16, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
