How to work it out
- Difference: 40 − 10 = 30
- Divide by the starting value: 30 ÷ 10 = 3
- Multiply by 100: 300%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 10 × (1 + 3) = 10 × 4 = 40.
In a spreadsheet: =(40-10)/10*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 4 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 400. The value has more than doubled.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $10 to $40 has gone up by 300%.
Why the change back is different
A 300% rise followed by a 300% fall does not bring you back to 10: it gives -80. The second percentage is taken of 40, not of 10, so to undo this change you need 75% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 40 to 10. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 10 to 40 is 300%, but from 40 back to 10 is -75%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 10 and 40: 120%. See Percentage difference between 10 and 40.
