How to work it out
- Difference: 12 − 5 = 7
- Divide by the starting value: 7 ÷ 5 = 1.4
- Multiply by 100: 140%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 5 × (1 + 1.4) = 5 × 2.4 = 12.
In a spreadsheet: =(12-5)/5*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 2.4 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 240. The value has more than doubled.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $5 to $12 has gone up by 140%.
Why the change back is different
A 140% rise followed by a 140% fall does not bring you back to 5: it gives -4.8. The second percentage is taken of 12, not of 5, so to undo this change you need 58.3333% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 12 to 5. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 5 to 12 is 140%, but from 12 back to 5 is -58.3333%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 5 and 12: 82.3529%. See Percentage difference between 5 and 12.
