How to work it out

  1. Difference: 6 − 5 = 1
  2. Divide by the starting value: 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2
  3. Multiply by 100: 20%
  4. Check: Work forwards from the start: 5 × (1 + 0.2) = 5 × 1.2 = 6.

In a spreadsheet: =(6-5)/5*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.

What the result means

The new value is 1.2 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 120.

Prices: an item whose price rises from $5 to $6 has gone up by 20%.

Why the change back is different

A 20% rise followed by a 20% fall does not bring you back to 5: it gives 4.8. The second percentage is taken of 6, not of 5, so to undo this change you need 16.6667% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 6 to 5. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 5 to 6 is 20%, but from 6 back to 5 is -16.6667%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 5 and 6: 18.1818%. See Percentage difference between 5 and 6.
