How to work it out
- Difference: 100 − 90 = 10
- Divide by the starting value: 10 ÷ 90 = 0.111111
- Multiply by 100: 11.1111%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 90 × (1 + 0.111111) = 90 × 1.111111 = 100.
In a spreadsheet: =(100-90)/90*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 1.1111 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 111.1111.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $90 to $100 has gone up by 11.1111%.
Why the change back is different
A 11.1111% rise followed by a 11.1111% fall does not bring you back to 90: it gives 88.8889. The second percentage is taken of 100, not of 90, so to undo this change you need 10% instead.

For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 90 and 100: 10.5263%. See Percentage difference between 90 and 100.
