What is the Percentage Difference from 10 to 16?

From 10 to 16 is a 60% increase

How to work it out

  1. Difference: 16 − 10 = 6
  2. Divide by the starting value: 6 ÷ 10 = 0.6
  3. Multiply by 100: 60%
  4. Check: Work forwards from the start: 10 × (1 + 0.6) = 10 × 1.6 = 16.

In a spreadsheet: =(16-10)/10*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.

What the result means

The new value is 1.6 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 160.

Prices: an item whose price rises from $10 to $16 has gone up by 60%.

Why the change back is different

A 60% rise followed by a 60% fall does not bring you back to 10: it gives 6.4. The second percentage is taken of 16, not of 10, so to undo this change you need 37.5% instead.
