How to work it out
- Difference: 22 − 16 = 6
- Divide by the starting value: 6 ÷ 16 = 0.375
- Multiply by 100: 37.5%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 16 × (1 + 0.375) = 16 × 1.375 = 22.
In a spreadsheet: =(22-16)/16*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 1.375 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 137.5.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $16 to $22 has gone up by 37.5%.
Why the change back is different
A 37.5% rise followed by a 37.5% fall does not bring you back to 16: it gives 13.75. The second percentage is taken of 22, not of 16, so to undo this change you need 27.2727% instead.
