20 single-digit addition (0–9) problems with an answer key. Print with your browser; the answers print on a separate page.
How to use this worksheet
Print it, set a time limit if you like, and mark it with the key. Press “New worksheet” for a fresh set of numbers at the same level: every set is different, so it works for repeated practice and for a whole class.
Worked example: 0 + 3
Here is the method for the first problem on this sheet, step by step. The same steps work for every problem at this level.
- Start at the larger number, 3, and count on 0 more: you reach 3.
- Check by counting on from 0 instead: adding works in either order, so you get 3 again.
What this level practises
Single-digit addition (0–9) is usually taught in kindergarten and grade 1. This sheet has 20 problems; the answers run from 2 to 17, and the problem with the largest answer is 8 + 9 = 17. Work through the sheet without a calculator, then mark it with the key: the aim is accuracy first and speed second.
Tips for addition
- Line the numbers up by place value before adding: ones under ones, tens under tens.
- Always start with the ones column and move left, so carried digits land in the right place.
- Estimate first by rounding to the nearest ten. If the answer is far from the estimate, look for a missed carry.
- Once a sheet is easy, time it and try to beat the time on the next one rather than moving up a level straight away.
Printing
Use your browser’s print command. The menus, buttons and ads are left off the printout, and the answer key starts on a new page so it can be kept back. For a whole class, print one sheet, press “New worksheet” and print again to give each group different numbers.
