How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.5 × 100 = 50%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 50% of 2 is 0.5 × 2 = 1.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/2 = p/100, so p = 1 × 100 ÷ 2 = 50%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1/2*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

1 is exactly half of 2. The part that is left, 1, is the other 50%.

Test scores: 1 correct answers out of 2 is a score of 50%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.

Turning it around

If you know that 1 is 50% of a number, you can get that number back: 1 ÷ 0.5 = 2. And 2 as a percentage of 1 is 200%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
