How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.1 × 100 = 10%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10% of 100 is 0.1 × 100 = 10.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = p/100, so p = 10 × 100 ÷ 100 = 10%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

10 is between a tenth and a quarter of 100. The part that is left, 90, is the other 90%.

Test scores: 10 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 10%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.

Turning it around

If you know that 10 is 10% of a number, you can get that number back: 10 ÷ 0.1 = 100. And 100 as a percentage of 10 is 1,000%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
