How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 10 ÷ 8 = 1.25
- Multiply by 100: 1.25 × 100 = 125%
- Check: Work backwards: 125% of 8 is 1.25 × 8 = 10.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/8 = p/100, so p = 10 × 100 ÷ 8 = 125%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10/8*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
10 is more than the whole amount (1.25 times as much) of 8. 10 goes past 8 by 2, which is another 25% on top of the whole.
Targets: selling 10 items against a target of 8 means reaching 125% of the target, beating it by 25%.
Turning it around
If you know that 10 is 125% of a number, you can get that number back: 10 ÷ 1.25 = 8. And 8 as a percentage of 10 is 80%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
