How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 19 ÷ 100 = 0.19
- Multiply by 100: 0.19 × 100 = 19%
- Check: Work backwards: 19% of 100 is 0.19 × 100 = 19.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 19/100 = p/100, so p = 19 × 100 ÷ 100 = 19%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =19/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
19 is between a tenth and a quarter of 100. The part that is left, 81, is the other 81%.
