How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 100 ÷ 1 = 100
  2. Multiply by 100: 100 × 100 = 10,000%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10,000% of 1 is 100 × 1 = 100.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 100/1 = p/100, so p = 100 × 100 ÷ 1 = 10,000%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100/1*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

100 is more than the whole amount (100 times as much) of 1. 100 goes past 1 by 99, which is another 9,900% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 100 items against a target of 1 means reaching 10,000% of the target, beating it by 9,900%.

Turning it around

If you know that 100 is 10,000% of a number, you can get that number back: 100 ÷ 100 = 1. And 1 as a percentage of 100 is 1%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
