How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.01 × 100 = 1%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1% of 100 is 0.01 × 100 = 1.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = p/100, so p = 1 × 100 ÷ 100 = 1%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

1 is less than a tenth of 100. The part that is left, 99, is the other 99%.

Test scores: 1 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 1%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.

Turning it around

If you know that 1 is 1% of a number, you can get that number back: 1 ÷ 0.01 = 100. And 100 as a percentage of 1 is 10,000%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
