How the answer is worked out

A percentage is a number out of 100. To find what percent 100 is of 100, imagine 100 split into 100 equal parts of 1 each. 100 contains 100 of those parts, so 100 is 100% of 100.

100 is exactly the whole amount of 100.

A quicker way

Find 1% of 100 first: 100 ÷ 100 = 1. Then count how many of those fit into 100: 100 ÷ 1 = 100.

Because 100 × 1 = 100, multiply both numbers by 1: 100 × 1 = 100, so the answer is 100% with no division needed.

Work backwards: 100% of 100 is 1 × 100 = 100. Getting 100 back shows the answer is right.

Rounding

Rounded to a whole number the percentage is 100, to one decimal place 100.0 and to two decimal places 100.00. Round only at the end: rounding halfway through a calculation can change the last digit.

The formula explained

percentage = part ÷ whole × 100. The part is the number you are asking about and the whole is the number after “of”. Dividing gives the fraction of the whole, and multiplying by 100 turns that fraction into a number out of 100.

1. Divide the part by the whole: 20 ÷ 40 = 0.5
2. Multiply by 100: 0.5 × 100 = 50%
