How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 14 ÷ 35 = 0.4
- Multiply by 100: 0.4 × 100 = 40%
- Check: Work backwards: 40% of 35 is 0.4 × 35 = 14.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 14/35 = p/100, so p = 14 × 100 ÷ 35 = 40%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =14/35*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
