How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 17 ÷ 20 = 0.85
- Multiply by 100: 0.85 × 100 = 85%
- Check: Work backwards: 85% of 20 is 0.85 × 20 = 17.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 17/20 = p/100, so p = 17 × 100 ÷ 20 = 85%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =17/20*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
