How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.5 × 100 = 50%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 50% of 12 is 0.5 × 12 = 6.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/12 = p/100, so p = 6 × 100 ÷ 12 = 50%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6/12*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

6 is exactly half of 12. The part that is left, 6, is the other 50%.

Test scores: 6 correct answers out of 12 is a score of 50%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.

Turning it around

If you know that 6 is 50% of a number, you can get that number back: 6 ÷ 0.5 = 12. And 12 as a percentage of 6 is 200%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
