How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 21 ÷ 75 = 0.28
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.28 × 100 = 28%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 28% of 75 is 0.28 × 75 = 21.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/75 = p/100, so p = 21 × 100 ÷ 75 = 28%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21/75*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means
